Where will you be for summer solstice this year? The day that marks the longest hours of daylight with the earliest sunrise. The day where the sun seems to stand still.. at least in the Northern hemisphere.

The solstice is also a time of intensity, renewal and great potential. Honouring the solstice can remind us just how precious each day and season is, because the truth of its passing away is also acknowledged. Being mindful of this precious impermanence has a built-in invite to step back from the busyness of our lives and be awed by the company of nature, the company of light and darkness, and to be aware of the nature of our existence.

Around 5:30 yesterday morning I left the house for my car with the determination of beating the rush hour traffic to Toronto. When I got outside a gentle breeze brushed my face. The sky was spotted with clouds and many shades of pink. Birds were in full sonic concert for the dawning of a new day.  A heightened state of gratitude overcame me that I got to be a witness to this moment. For the rest of the day I exercised being a witness to my life and it's unfolding. The tasks at hand didn't have the same pressure and interactions didn't stir emotions in the same way. I was able to stay objective, mindful, compassionate and light at heart. Everything on the 'to do list' that day could have been done on auto pilot but I chose to stay witness and present. When it was time to retire that night my reflections were filled with added gratitude for the simplicity of this teaching.

To honour the Solstice invite to renew and step into great potential, try this exercise of being witness to the doings of your day. From your soul, from the bigger you, the inner wisdom keeper there is an objective eye, a kind and gentle heart. Experiences and interactions become rich with teachings and hold less judgement. When there is less attachment to outcome, there will be less suffering and an encouragement to stay present with a fuller breath.
