What Matters?

What Matters?

It's been two weeks since I left the Toronto studio for a pilgrimage to my birth place that I proudly call the fabulous Maritimes. Where the rivers and lakes meet the ocean frequently and powerfully and the glorious ocean meets the deep hearts of the people. Where you can be nowhere and with nothing and be full of love and gratitude. The overtone of the trip was nurtured the question "what matters?"

I had the honour to exhibit at the Buckland Merrifield Gallery as part of the Saint John August Gallery Hop. Shannon Merrifield believed in me and carried my creative life for 10 years which made meeting with collectors very special, even humbling.. that matters.

From there I went on to Nova Scotia to spend a brief weekend with my sons that university has captured for the last three years. I've not set eyes on them since Christmas so I could have eaten them, if they weren't 6 feet tall.  I missed them so much I sat through a UFC boxing championship with them.. kinda! ;-O Opportunities to love and cherish, laugh and cry with family.. that matters.

Celebrating friends and sisters you may walk a hundred journeys and lifetimes with whether with sheer joy or support.. that matters. Sharing meditation, contemplation and re-creation.. that matters.

Now the return journey to the studio for our busy season begins. I am so inspired with vision and a sense of purpose that I am imagining the 18 hour drive will be the final percolating vessel. The feeling of being grounded by nature, the Atlantic, space, noble silence and community. These will nourish us all behind the scenes at the Mindful Necessities studio and I would wish nothing less for you my friend.
with a lotus and a smile, Gisele

the heads down generation
the heads down generation

by Gisele Theriault March 24, 2019

The Heads Down Generation generally refers to those born after the 80’s but I would say the majority of the population is affected by the lure of our devices. Look around you in public places. Everywhere, people are almost qualified in their lives by their connection to a world that lives in their phone. We are losing the ability to be connected with one another where we are. We are even losing the map to the heart of who we are.  Depression and anxiety are on the rise. We are identifying with a digital world we have no empathetic connection to. The sense of who we think we should be to fit in and be accepted by others is currently framed by social media, celebrities and corporate branding. This makes my heart sink.

what is the spiritual solution to the violence in the world?
what is the spiritual solution to the violence in the world?

by Gisele Theriault March 17, 2019

It’s been an wonderful month so far in Rishikesh. My aspiration here was to do as little as possible. As an over doer this is a great task and not at all easy. Beyond attending satsangs (teachings) and meditation intensives, just being present with the vastness and colours of humanity in the mountains and on the Ganges is enough to change your life.

During a satsang with ShantiMayi someone asked the question for a magazine article she was writing on how spirituality can help the violence in the world.  ShantiMayi started with clarifying that in sanskrit, one of the oldest languages of scriptures there was no word for spiritual. Spiritual is life...

the gift and power of retreats
the gift and power of retreats

by Gisele Theriault March 10, 2019

Lately I've been thinking of why I feel so strongly about curating or attending retreats. There is nothing like a retreat to give us a focused opportunity to pull back from our life as we know it and all the demands and stresses that limit us.This in itself should be enough. To pull back far enough to be a witness and objective friend to our own lives is added sweet medicine. When we are away from routine and inspired it's easier to live between our heart and our gut (the second brain) and give the mind a vacation of its own for awhile.
